Basketball Night at the Sportspark

Every Saturday the Sportspark runs an exclusive Basketball night in the Haydn Morris Hall from 8.20-10.20pm. The sessions are just £2 for Members and £2.60 for Non-Members to play all night. If you’re looking to meet new people, or simply want to practice one on one, shoot hoops or play in a scrimmage, Saturday nights at Sportspark are for you!

Recreation Road Christmas Camp

Basketball in the Community are holding a Christmas basketball camp at Recreation Road school over the holidays. The dates are:

19th – 20th December : Years 3 – 7

21st – 22nd December : Years 8 – 11

Great hopes in USA for former Norfolk player Jake Lockhart

Jack Lockhart, former Norwich All-Stars stalwart has been making waves in the US and expectations for the coming season are higher than ever. After last year’s first ever NAIA National Tournament Final-Four appearance, the Northwood University men’s basketball team has been picked to win the 2011-2012 national championship. In the NAIA Division II Preseason Coaches’ Poll, the Seahawks took the top spot and are preseason ranked No. 1 in the nation. This is the first time in the history of the program that the Seahawks begin the season at the top of the list.

Other opponents ranked in the Top 25 include No. 4 Bellevue University (Neb.), No. 8 Embry-Riddle, and No. 19 Warner University.

In addition to being picked No. 1 in the NAIA Preseason Coaches’ Poll, the Seahawks were also picked to finish first in the Sun Conference regular season. Coach Rollie Massimino’s Seahawks received eight out of the nine possible first place votes. Massimino, who was the 2011 NAIA National Coach of the Year, returns six letterwinners who helped
the Seahawks to a perfect 16-0 record. The returning veterans include the 2011 Sun Conference Player of the Year and First-Team All-American, Jonathan Dunn (24 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 2.0 apg, 1.3 spg), and All-Conference selection and third-team All-American, Patrick Horstmann (11.9 ppg, 10 rpg, 1.6 apg). The Seahawks will also be welcoming newcomers
Masse Doumbe and Jake Lockhart, who are expected to make significant contributions to the team’s success this season.

James Bamfield Basketball Skills Academy

Earlier this week King’s Lynn (COWA) Fury player and coach James Bamfield launched a new basketball skills academy in King’s Lynn, aimed at developing basketball talent from a young age in the West Norfolk area. The launch is being marked by a new annual week-long summer camp.

James Bamfield has been head coach of the Fury National League program for the past 10 years and has produced numerous players who have gone on to play top level basketball. More information about the academy can be found on their website.

Great Yarmouth 3on3 Tournament

On 31st July Great Yarmouth will again play host to the Clifftop Charity Basketball 3on3 event. The event – held annually and organised by local standout player Patrick Manifold – aims to promote basketball and the importance of a healthy lifestyle while giving back to the local community.

Norfolk Cup Finals

On 15th May the Open Academy in Heartsease played host to the finals of the Cup, Trophy and Plate competitions as the 2010/11 season of the Norfolk League came to a close. Below are the results and MVPs of each of the final games:

UEA Women enter National League

The University of East Anglia Women’s team have been accepted into the National League for the 2011/2012 season. They will be competing in the Midlands/South East Division Two. Home games will be played at the UEA Sportspark on Saturdays (tip-off 5pm) and a full fixture list will appear on Norfolkbasketball.net once it is finalised. The league is a step up for the UEA team and brings senior Women’s National League competition back to Norfolk after a prolonged absence. The full lineup for D2W looks like this:
